Our mission is to celebrate their dedication and hard work, offering them a chance to shine and be recognized for their achievements on our online platform.


Originally conceived as an online piano competition with categories encompassing Classical and Modern/Contemporary solo piano, Kawai Malaysia is thrilled to announce the expansion of this extraordinary competition from the digital realm to the physical stage.


This year, participants will have the opportunity to transcend boundaries and explore a diverse array of modern and contemporary genres. From solo performances to collaborative endeavors involving multiple instruments, our competition aims to foster creativity and innovation. Moreover, we welcome original compositions, providing a platform for aspiring artists to showcase their unique musical creations.

  • KEON CHIA

    ORIGINAL COMPOSITION JUDGE

    Keon Chia, a luminary in songwriting and music production with over a decade at Warner Chappell Music, has made an indelible mark across Asia Pacific. His compositions, including Crowd Lu's "Your Name Engraved Herein" and Karen Mok's "My Dear," resonate deeply with audiences. In 2018, his collaboration on "My Dear" earned him a nomination at the Malaysia PWH Music Awards. Additionally, his work on "Your Name Engraved Herein" garnered critical acclaim, winning Best Original Song at the 57th Golden Horse Awards and Song of the Year at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards. Chia's dedication to pushing musical boundaries continues to earn him recognition as a leading innovator in the industry.

  • DANIEL VEERAPEN

    ORIGINAL COMPOSITION JUDGE

    Daniel Veerapen, an award-winning Music Producer and Director, is renowned for his impressive accomplishments and contributions to the music industry. He served as the Music Director for the prestigious South East Asian Games in 2017, showcasing his exceptional talent on an international stage. In 2021, Daniel won the FFM award for Best Original Song, adding to his list of accolades which include multiple nominations for FFM Best Original Score in 2022, AIM Best Producer, and Global Music Awards Best Album. His pioneering efforts in the Malaysian YouTube music scene have solidified his reputation as a trailblazer alongside other famous YouTubers. On TikTok, his content has amassed millions of likes and views, reflecting his widespread appeal and influence. Specializing in a diverse range of genres, from electronic and pop to orchestral music, Daniel's versatility is a hallmark of his work. His roots as a jazz pianist, with years spent touring the Kuala Lumpur jazz scene and collaborating with numerous renowned artists, have further enriched his musical prowess. Daniel's extensive experience as a music director has contributed to the success of some of the biggest shows in Malaysia.

  • GENERVIE KAM

    ORIGINAL COMPOSITION JUDGE

    Genervie Kam stands as a luminary in the realm of music, celebrated for her multifaceted talents as a Malaysian violinist, pianist, music director, and arranger. With a career spanning over three decades, Genervie has established herself as a versatile musician of unparalleled skill and artistry within the region. Genervie's remarkable contributions to the musical landscape have been recognized and celebrated by the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Malaysia, culminating in the prestigious Anugerah Bakat Muda (Penggubah Muzik) at the Anugerah Seni Negara. This esteemed accolade serves as a testament to Genervie's unwavering dedication to her craft and her profound impact on the Malaysian music scene.

  • JAMES BOYLE

    MODERN CONTEMPORARY JUDGE

    Award winning Music Director and the current Dean of the Faculty of Music of ASWARA, Dr. James P.S. Boyle, is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music and a graduate of Universiti Malaya with a PhD (Musicology) from the Faculty of Creative Arts, and a Master Degree of Art in Performing Arts. His topics of expertise include contemporary playing styles on the piano, aural and ear training classes, compositional methods, improvisational skills and song writing classes. James, a pianist and band leader also performs in various Jazz festivals in the Asian region. An active composer and also a researcher with various publications in the field of contemporary music and a composer in the corporate and theatre world, James is also a Certified Movie director and a Line Producer from the Hollywood Film Institute. With his unique brand of humour and talent, students always emerge from his classes enriched and empowered by his teachings.

  • DR. YEOH PEI ANN

    MODERN CONTEMPORARY JUDGE

    Pei Ann Yeoh is a musician from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She has received degrees from Queensland Conservatorium (Australia); and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (UK). She completed her doctorate degree at King’s College London under the supervision of Dr. Andy Fry. In 2021, she was elected as an Associate of King’s College London. She has worked and played with renowned musicians such as Dave Holland, Chris Potter, James Morrison, Mark Feldman, Frederic Rzewski. As a leader and ensemble member, she has released albums on FMR Records (UK), Sluchaj (Poland), and Boomslang Records (Austria). She was selected to be a One Beat fellow as part of a residency established by the U.S. Department of State. She is currently a senior lecturer at the College of Creative Arts, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

  • LEE KOK LEONG

    MODERN CONTEMPORARY JUDGE

    Resident Conductor & Music Director, The klpac Orchestra


    Kok Leong, with over two decades in Malaysia's orchestral scene as a violist, conductor, and music educator, boasts a diverse career. He's performed prominently with ensembles like the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra. As a conductor, he debuted with the Galaxy Orchestra in 2005, later becoming Resident Conductor until 2011. Mentored by Brian Tan and Elaine Pao, he assumed the role of Resident Conductor & Music Director of The klpac Orchestra in 2015. Beyond klpac, he conducts at festivals and productions including the Klang Music Festival and Euphrasia The Musical. Passionate about education, he founded Ottava Music and leads ensembles at several high schools. Kok Leong's achievements include nominations at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards and awards from national music competitions..

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS 

Provide a high-quality recording with 3 minutes duration of the video and not more

Participant may choose a song or a section of a piece that best showcases their playing within the duration of 3 minutes.

Ensure videos display the participant's face, hands, and legs (pedal usage for piano).

For ensembles: Split-screen or multi-screen recordings are allowed

Participants may use either a digital or acoustic piano for the audition (For pianists)

Pitch correction for vocalists, violinists etc. are prohibited. Recordings should be recorded without any pitch manipulation.

Competition participants must submit either an individual photo of themselves or a group photo if they're entering as a team, according to their respective categories.

Upload audition video to YouTube and provide the link in the registration form for judges’ viewing.
