For more than nine decades, Kawai has pursued a single vision: to build pianos of exceptional quality and enduring beauty. Rooted in Japanese artistry and driven by innovation, Kawai has grown from a small workshop in Hamamatsu, Japan, into a global leader in piano manufacturing.
What sets Kawai apart is not only its commitment to precision and sound, but also the spirit of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Every Kawai piano carries with it a legacy of passion, innovation, and the timeless pursuit of musical excellence.

Crafting Excellence in Every Note
The Kawai Story
Koichi Kawai was born in 1886 in Hamamatsu, a city that would later become known as Japan’s center for musical instrument making. From a young age, Koichi displayed exceptional mechanical ability. Apprenticed to a watchmaker and later exposed to the early piano industry in Japan, he became fascinated with the complex mechanisms that produced music. In 1927, Koichi founded the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory with seven like-minded colleagues.
What made Koichi extraordinary was not only his technical skill but his vision. At a time when pianos in Japan were considered a luxury imported from the West, Koichi was determined to develop a Japanese piano that could rival the best in the world. He was the first in Japan to design and build a complete piano action, a feat that established him as a true pioneer. Koichi’s dream was to create instruments that brought music into the homes, schools, and concert halls of Japan. His dedication to innovation and uncompromising standards laid the cornerstone of the Kawai legacy.

The Beginning of Japanese Piano Innovation
Shigeru Kawai, Koichi’s son, inherited both his father’s engineering brilliance and his artistic sensibility. Joining the company as a young man, Shigeru brought a vision of growth and modernization. In 1955, following Koichi’s passing, Shigeru assumed leadership at a time when Japan was undergoing rapid change. With determination, he expanded Kawai’s production capacity while remaining faithful to the values of craftsmanship.
Shigeru introduced advanced production technologies and pioneered modern facilities that combined precision engineering with handcraft. His leadership saw the construction of the Ryuyo Grand Piano Factory, a symbol of uncompromising excellence in piano building. Beyond infrastructure, Shigeru was passionate about nurturing the next generation of master piano builders. He believed that every Kawai piano should be built not only as an instrument but as a work of art, a philosophy that lives on in the prestigious Shigeru Kawai grand pianos—crafted in his honor.
Shigeru’s legacy is more than instruments; it is a culture of passion and respect for the piano, built to endure for centuries.

Modernising Craftsmanship and Growing The Legacy
The present-day chapter of Kawai is guided by Hirotaka Kawai, the grandson of Koichi. Hirotaka represents the third generation of leadership, ensuring that the values of tradition and innovation remain perfectly balanced. With a background in engineering and global business, Hirotaka has brought Kawai into the 21st century, embracing both acoustic excellence and technological innovation.
Under his leadership, Kawai has advanced the development of digital and hybrid pianos, instruments that fuse the artistry of the acoustic piano with modern digital possibilities. He has championed environmentally responsible manufacturing, pioneering the use of sustainable materials and energy-efficient production processes. Hirotaka’s vision is clear: to continue crafting world-class instruments that inspire future generations, while preserving the planet for them to inherit.
Through his leadership, Kawai remains not only a manufacturer of instruments but a custodian of music’s future.

Bringing Acoustic Heritage into The Digital Age
At the heart of Kawai’s piano excellence lies the Ryuyo Grand Piano Facility in Japan. More than a factory, Ryuyo is a sanctuary where science and art coexist in perfect harmony. Here, time seems to move differently. Master artisans, many with decades of experience, shape and refine each component of a grand piano by hand. Every step—selecting the finest spruce for the soundboard, hand-voicing each hammer, perfecting the action mechanism—is carried out with meticulous care.
Ryuyo represents the pinnacle of Kawai’s dedication to excellence. It is here that the Shigeru Kawai series, considered among the world’s most elite pianos, is born. These instruments are not mass-produced; they are entrusted to master piano builders who treat each piano as a lifelong creation. The Ryuyo facility embodies the belief that a piano is more than wood, felt, and steel—it is a vessel for emotion, capable of carrying a musician’s soul.
